India 2007: Parents kill unborn Girl Children

--By Sagar Satapathy, Editor-in-Chief

Only a few months back, the 51st session of the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) expressed concern over the state of girl children in different parts of the world and vowed to end the violence and atrocities against them. Despite the talks about women empowerment and equal rights to girls in every field including education and employment, India in 2007 brings no joy to the poor girl children who are being killed even before birth.

Blame it on modern ultrasound technology or lack of awareness among people, the fact is that female foeticide is rampant in India that celebrates 60th year of its independence. It's true that not all people in India do that. However, there are a significant number of people who still believe that having a girl child is a sin or bad curse. It happens mostly in rural belt of India where people have been subjected to government apathy and corrupt practice by the medical practitioners and other authorities.

It seems girl children in India are still struggling for freedom, though Indian-born women like Kalpana Chawla, Sunita Williams, Sania Mirza and Aishwarya Rai have achieved more than what their male counterparts did. Still some parents are are not willing to accept a girl child and prefer boys over them.

In a gruesome incident, the police found more than 40 bags full of baby body parts outside an abortion facility in Nayagarh, Orissa, an eastern state of India. Local forensic experts suggest the remains are the product of illegal sex-selective abortions. The incident came to light first when a boy noticed seven infant bodies on the foot of a mountain on July 14 and reported it to the people. The owners of the abortion facility were arrested immediately and a crime branch inquiry has been ordered.

The incident create a shock wave across India. Surprisingly, more such bodies found in other states such as Maharashtra, Bihar and Rajasthan. Even such cases have been reported from other parts of Orissa. It clearly suggests that 'female foeticide' is rampant in India and parents kill their unborn foetus after the ultrasound analysis detects the gender of the babies.

The entire episode not only raised many questions before the public, but also it has put the government in a tight spot. India takes pride in electing its first Woman President only a week ago. However, killing of these infants and foetus clearly exposed the government and administration before the world. Is it the society we are looking for? The government and administration failed completely in preventing such heinous crime, which is a matter of concern for all.

There is no doubt that other parts of the world are also witnessing high abortion rates and atrocities against girl children. This is a global issue and must be addressed immediately. India is exposed before the world, as it has global presence and most countries still look to it for democratic reforms, electoral reforms and other health opinions. India is all set to become a superpower for its high growth rate, flexibility in business & investment and the global presence of the Indians. However, such heinous crimes may undermine its position. It's high time we take drastic steps to eradicate such evils from our society.

They should bring death penalty, then they will stop.

I agree. That's the only option left to stop such heinous crime.

Fear of death only propogates more violence. Education and exposure to modern ideology will not only bring an end to female foetocide, but help the society progress as a whole.

The situation is pervasive, although death-by-abortion is not. Women are truly the niggers of the world.

what is this? YOu have only just noticed this crime? It has been reported internationally for DECADES. There are people in India who drive around with portable ultrasound equipment in the back of their cars doing sex identification ultrasounds as a full time business and this has been known for decades. There are areas in India and nearby Muslim country's where there are NO female children at all because of gender selection abortions.

YOu are all shocked, congratulations. Now what?

I hate to say this, but this HAS been going on for a LONG time, so good luck preventing it. Those people who think like that will continue to think like that & will find other ways to have abortions unsafely if it becomes illegal. In addition, India is WAY overpopulated. What that country needs is some effective education about birth control and financial resources to provide it to the people who need it. Maybe then they would have more resources to devote to the issues that need to be tackled first.

This and infanticide are both practiced by some of these mothers for altruistic reasons. They believe that girls are better off dead than having to live the way they do in India. The believe they are doing it for the baby girl not for themselves.

I don't know: In the US, you'd have to convince the Government that any kind of crime was being committed.

I tried to get my tax deduction for my 10 unconceived baby girls, but IRS turned it down. They are all just potential murderers!

Wow. I understand cultural differences, but let's just think... If all female babies were killed as a fetus then who would be left to carry the male children??

Sick. Just plain sick and wrong.

That's exactly what is happening in China. Young men outnumber young women by a factor of 100 to one. Talk about sexually frustrated men!

Well, all I can say is that if God would just stop all birth everywhere around the world then it would solve many problems. No abortion worries, no over population, no starvation, less homless, and probably less genocide. So since God isn't doing it let's have all governments just fix all newborns for the next 30 years. Problem solved for everyone with a complaint.

Why is there a concern about this in India ? In America there are more abortions than live births.

Who cares? Let them kill themselves off.

In America we are killing unborn
girls also and people march to
protect this "right". We are outraged at India, but we murder our unborn boys and girls legally
everyday.

The article is not about abortion necessarily, it's about female foeticide. That's the issue here.

bringing death to these people is to easy, once there life is ended there is no more pain etc etc its over, what should happen is that these people should pay everyday they should be treated in the same way they treated the unborn child, with no regard let them call on there knees in the street....death is to easy

Those who want to put people to death for the crime of putting people (girls) to death cannot hold the belief that life is sacred. Also, any community that kills it's youth... destroys itself...and therein lies one solution.

It's tragic to say the least. We adopted twin girls from India in 1999. Their parents had 3 other daughters and could not afford anymore children. I can tell my daughters that their parents weren't like the rest - thank God.

Another thing - I just posted about my adopted Indian girls - the issue is not abortion which is horrible in itself - the issue is infantcide where they kill these girls when they are born - just murder the babies after they take their first breath - when I look into my girls' eyes I cannot imagine someone killing them right as or after they take their first breath - God help us~~~

I also agree that this story is alarming and stirs a myriad of emotions. For me the most grievous thing about this story, however, is its own gender bias. Feotocide is unthinkable, regardless the gender of the victim. As far as the need to address reform in these "third world countries, perhaps we should first consider our own heartlessness, regarding the killing of innocent unborn as a cure for our own selfish goals.

It's terrible that parents want to abort only their female fetuses. But having a child a big commitment. If the parents don't want to raise a daughter maybe they are better off having an abortion than mal-treating a daughter after she is born.

The Chinese with their one-child policy have been doing the same thing for years. No one wants daughters if they can have onlyn one child in China. In fact this has been going on so long that a whole generation of boys are arriving at the threshold of manhood with 55 men for every 45 women. Not a good situation.

Maybe in another 20 years, it will turn around. One man can sire many children but he is limited by the number of wombs available and the 40 week gestation period.

In a culture like America that is more female friendly, having a daughter is the best thing that can happen to a woman.

Imagine being the only eligible female in 500 square miles full of unmarried males in a culture where having a family is everything. Families who invest in raising baby girls to womanhood will come to realize that their unmarried daughters are the most powerful human beings for miles around. These women will control which males get married and which will be forced to move away from their home villages to find wives or live alone without a wife. They will come to control the destiny of rural India and China.

The men in these countries better wise up. These are military/religious oligarchies and they are basically duping the population into producing soldiers that will be completely expendable because of their over-whelming numbers. It seems the cultures that girl-child kill do not expect their women to go to war; so women in numbers are not as valuable to them and not worth these corrupt governments resources that would give them a fair chance at life.

I am ashamed of Indians that will not change and live in their old fashioned ways. My husband and me are both Indian and found out we are having a girl, did we chose abortion, no we did not. We are happy we are being blessed with a child. Look at those people who can not have children at all.Indian parents need to realize boys are no better. They will not support you in your old age. There are Indian Boys who move out and leave their parents all alone in their old age. To all Indian parents who think that girls dont matter, think again.

PS...THEY SHOULD ALL ROTE IN HELL.

It is a real shame that this practice has flourished in India. This is one example of a good technology beig misused.
But , everyone wants to make money from a demand by public, even your news page has an advertisement link to a site offering ways and means of selecting gender of unborn child. A shame on you too.
