News At A Glance: 01 July 2007
1) High Alert in UK: The UK government has raised its terrorism threat level to "critical" after a series of unsuccessful terrorist attacks. The police has arrested at least four persons in connection with the car bombs. Yesterday, a car rammed into Scotland's Glasgow International airport and burst into flames. On Friday, two explosives-laden cars were discovered in London.2) Normalcy in Mumbai: Although it's still raining in Mumbai, the life is slowly returning to normal. However, heavy rains are still playing havoc in other parts of Maharashtra.
3) Prisoners released by Pakistan: After India released 43 Pakistani prisoners, Pakistan reciprocated by releasing 50 Indian fishermen.
4) Maoist Attack in Bihar: At least nine people, including seven policemen, were killed when Maoist guerrillas attacked a police station and a smaller police post at Rajpur in Rohtas district of Bihar.
5) Amarnath "Shivling" Melted: After being suspended for a couple of days due to heavy rains, the Amarnath Yatra resumed today morning. However, there is a bad news for the pilgrims. The natural ice shivling in the Amarnath shrine melted completely. It is attributed to global warming and environment changes.
6) Bronze for India: India survived a second half onslaught by England to score a 4-3 victory and win the bronze medal in the Champions Challenge Hockey tournament in Belgium. Argentina won the title after beating New Zealand 3-2 in the final.
