Which other building in the city is now going to become rubble and kill its occupants after Laxmi Chaya? It’s a well-known fact that most of the buildings in the city — old or new — have not remained untouched by illegal alterations. A pillar demolished here, a wall broken down there — it’s all in a day’s work for the residents and their interior designers. All you need to do is grease the palms of the authorities.
Is the government waiting for such buildings to collapse? It will shell out lakhs of rupees after the crash from tax payers’ money as compensation to the victims instead of taking precautions in the first place.
The Panchratna Building in south Mumbai has been in the news for such rampant alterations for years now. But neither the government nor the BMC has taken any action to correct this.
