News Update: 22 July 2007

1) NDA fields Najma Heptullah for Vice-President: The NDA played a political masterstroke by fielding former Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson Najma Heptullah as its candidate for Vice-President. Najma is the grandniece of Congress leader and freedom fighter Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

The election for Vice-President will be a three-cornered contest with the UPA-Left combine and the UNPA fileding their own candidates. Interestingly, all three candidates are Muslims.

2) Dadua Killed: Dreaded bandit Shiv Kumar Patel, alias Dadua was killed in an encounter with the UP Police's STF. He was wanted in over 200 cases of murder, kidnapping and extortion and carried a reward of Rs. 5 Lakhs on his head.

3) Dubai Tower is World's Tallest Building: The Burj Dubai in UAE became the tallest building in the world after the construction of its 141st floor was completed. The under-construction tower will use up 39,000 tonnes of steel and 1,42,000 square metres of glass.
