Delaying Cord Cutting Beneficial for Babies

Delaying the clamping or cutting the umbilical cord by a few minutes can turn beneficial for the newborn according to some doctors. In the normal scenario, doctors usually clamp and then cut the cord soon after the baby is delivered which may result in some blood disorders or iron deficiency resulting in anemia in the baby, which happens in most cases.

According to Andrew Weeks, a lecturer in Obstetrics at University of Liverpool, leaving the cord intact for sometime may increase the blood supply as well as the iron levels in the newborn. As per Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, there are no guidelines on when exactly the cord should be cut.
