Supreme Court asked States to make Marriage Registration Compulsory

The Supreme Court directed all states and Union Territories to formulate appropriate legislation within three months to make marriage registration compulsory. A bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat asked the states and UTs to file a compliance report along with an affidavit after the deadline period.

The new judgement will ensure that marriage registration be made mandatory for all religions. As expected, the Muslim groups objected to the Supreme Court's order, saying it violates their religious obligations. However, BJP has welcomed the apex court's order. According to legal experts, even though non-registration of marriages would not make marriages void, the Supreme Court's order was a step towards formulation of a uniform civil code.
