Five killed in Guwahati Violence, Army called in

At least 5 people were killed and over 100 were injured in a clash between tribals and locals in Guwahati. Curfew was imposed in the Bentola area of the city and Army was called in to control the violence. According to sources, the santhal tribe of Assam were on a procession to the Assembly to demand ST status for their community. At least 10,000 tribals were marching in the procession. They were supported by the All Assam Adivasi Students' Association (AAASA).

However, they suddenly went berserk and damaged shops and vehicles, forcing the local residents to retaliate. Local residents armed with sticks and iron rods, attacked the fleeing protesters and beat them mercilessly. According to police sources, more than 3,000 locals were involved in the mob attack. The army has been called in to restore law and order in the city. Injured people are being treated in various hospitals.
