Chopra Commission rejects Gujjars' Demand
The Chopra Commission set up by the Rajasthan government has rejected the Gujjar community's demand of Scheduled Tribes status. However, it has made a few suggestions to bring Gujjars to the mainstream and asked the government to launch new measures to alleviate their poverty and lack of awareness. The Chopra Commission visited 147 villages and conducted a survey in another 450 villages of the state. According to the Commission, it would not recommend ST status for Gujjars, as the statistical data for their socio-economic conditions do not meet those criteria. Gujjars have expressed shock and anguish over the report and have threatened to start fresh agitation if their demands are not met.
