In May 2007, these four journalists of Mid-Day daily had written articles alleging that former Chief Justice Y K Sabbharwal's sons (both in Mall construction business) had benefited from his orders to seal shops and offices in residential areas of Delhi.

Even if the journalists maintained that they had conclusive evidence in support of their claim, the Delhi High Court had sentenced them to jail for writing against a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court stayed that order and fixed the next date of hearing for January 16. Meanwhile, journalists across the country and CPI(M) leaders including LS Speaker Somnath Chaterjee and Sitaram Yechury have demanded a probe into the allegations.

Political Crisis in Karnataka deepens

The political drama in Karnataka continues with the JD(S) playing hide and seek game with its alliance partner BJP just a week before the scheduled power transfer. As per the power-sharing agreement, the JD(S) will have hand over the power in Karnataka on Oct 3. However, JD(S) leader H D Devegowda and Karnataka CM H D Kumaraswamy seem in no mood to transfer the power to BJP.

H D Devegowda pulled out of the talks with the BJP in Delhi yesterday by cancelling the luncheon meeting with BJP President Rajnath Singh. He returned to Bangalore in the evening. H D Kumaraswamy too did some flip flop fist saying he would resign on October 3 and later backtracking on this. He said, "only on October 3, I will let people know what I will do".

Although the gap between BJP and JD(S) has widened to a great extent, the immediate provocation for a possible split was attributed to a attempt to murder case filed by Tourism minister B Sriramulu against the Chief Minister. The BJP is hopeful of resolving the crisis at the earliest.

Hockey Players to go on Hunger Strike

It's cash raining on the cricket players after the famous Twenty20 World Cup victory. They are being overloaded with praise, admiration, gifts and money. But look, who are not amused? It's the hockey players who recently brought glory to the country by winning the Asia Cup Hockey tournament in presence of teams like Pakistan, South Korea and Malaysia. Irked by the "step-motherly treatment" meted out to the Indian hockey players by the central and four state governments, the team members have decided to go on a 'hunger strike'.

Chief Coach Joaquim Carvalho, Coach Ramesh Parameswaran, manager R K Shetty and four players (Vikram Kanth, V R Rahunath, S V Sunil and Ignace Tirkey) will go on a hunger strike outside the residence of the Karnataka Chief Minister. While the Karnataka CM announced Rs 5 lakh cash award for two state players, he did not even personally congratulated the hockey players from the state on their remarkable performance in the Asia Cup.

Carvalho pooh-poohed Civil Aviation Minister Prafull Patel (NCP)'s decision to give cash awards and out-of-turn promotion to cricketers in Air India and Indian Airlines. He wondered whether the Minister knew that these organisations also has hockey players on their pay rolls. He further charged that these politicians want to cash on the popularity of cricket and cricketers. It was evident when they almost turned the felicitation ceremony at Wankhede Stadium to a political circus.

Indian Heroes return Home, India Salutes the Victorious Team

A victorious Indian Cricket team arrived to a rousing welcome at the Sahar Airport at Mumbai. The team was accorded a warm homecoming, which was really unprecedented for them anf they would remember it forever. A large number fans descended on the Sahar Airport to greet their heroes. Slogans, shouting and flowers filled the air. Joy and celebrations were all around.

A proud captain MS Dhoni and other team members landed at the CSI Airport at 8.15 AM. They were welcomed by Mahrashtra CM Vilasrao Deshmukh, Deput CM R R Patil, many cabinet ministers, BCCI President Sharad Pawar and many others. The triumphant cricketers and the support staff were welcomed with "garlands" and "tilaks".

The victorious team was being taken in an open-topped bus from the Airport to Wankhede Stadium. Millions of people stood on the road side to get a glimpse of the Indian team. Life has come to a halt in Mumbai, as the cavalcade passes through the city. Motorcade, security personnel, officials and other fans followed Team India to the Wankhede Statuim.

It is really heartening to seep people coming out to greet the players, braving heavy rain and traffic jam. The brave heart Indian players definitely deserve such appreciation and admiration. The players also showed spirit and enthusiasm to wave to their fans throughout the procession. Players like Yuvraj, Harbhajan and Sreesanth were seen dancing to Bhangra and other tunes.

A grand felicitation function for the players was held by the BCCI at Wankhede Stadium. The team took a 30-km journey from Sahar Airport to Wankhede Stadium and never showed signs of tiredness. There was not a single place left in the Wankhede Stadium, as the Mumbaikars thronged there in large numbers.

Politics took the center stage, as the political leaders and BCCI officials took the front row and players (with the exception of Dhoni) were pushed to the second row. No sports persons including the likes of Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Saurav Ganguly were invited at the felicitation ceremony. This is highly condemnable, as it's quite obvious that the entire country wants to see its players, not the shrewd politicians. What happened today, presented the sorry state of Indian cricket. However, Indian players their millions of fans deserve the credit. We hardly bother about these politicians and their design.

Eklavya to run for Oscars

This is a surprise that shocked the entire country who are gripped in "Chak De" mood after the memorable Twenty20 World Cup victory in South Africa. Even a child can tell that "Chak De" is the best movie of the year and it deserves to get an Oscar, forget just about the selection. However, the big bosses do not think so. They have chosen "Eklavya" ahead of "Chak De" for nomination in the Foreign Film category.

While "Chak De" has broken all record, "Eklavya" hardly impressed anyone. Even only a few people bothered to appreciate the movie. But politics again took a heavy toll on the quality and popularity. A film that has no standing on the International arena has been given preference over a movie that has received accolade both at home and abroad.

The UPA sent a 12-page response to the Left's concerns and objections. However, that failed to pacify the Left leaders who hold a firm belief that the nuclear deal is not in India's interest.

In another development, Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) chief Anil Kakodkar reached Vienna to attend a general body meeting of the board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Needless to say, this move did not go well with the Left leaders who had asked the government to stay away from this meeting.

Ram Setu issue Boils Up

The government is planning to move the Supreme Court for the resumption of work on Sethusamudram project, even as the issue has exposed the intra-party rivalry in congress. Shipping Minister TR Balu (DMK) said the government would approach the Supreme Court to obtain orders to allow resumption of work in Adam's Bridge.

DMK Supremo and Tamil Nadu CM M Karunanidhi already created a stir by terming Lord Ram as an imaginary character. The Ram Setu issue has begun to sink Congress, as Congress leader RK Dhawan joined Jairam Ramesh to ask Culture Minister Ambika Soni to resign on moral grounds.

Pakistan EC amends rules to favor Pervez Musharraf

The Pakistan Election Commission bent rules to clear the ways for Pervez Musharraf to seek a re-election as President for another five-year term. It has amended the Presidential Election Rules 1998 so that Article 63 of the Constitution does not apply to the President.

Experts have slammed the Government and Election Commission for showing undue favor to President Pervez Musharraf. In an interesting development, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has issued notices to the government and the EC on this issue. A nine-member bench of the SC will hear the case.
