Manmohan's China Visit
After arriving in Beijing, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh met students from the Centre for India Studies at Peking University, Beijing. He also announced a package of Rs. 75 lakh in support of the centre. The Centre for India Studies was inaugurated by former PM A B Vajpayee in June 2003.The Prime Minister also visited Beijing's National Olympic Stadium, where the 2008 Olympic Games would be inaugurated. Later, in the evening he attended a private dinner hosted by his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in west Beijing.
Monday will be a hectic day for Dr. Manmohan Singh, as he would attend several functions and meetings. He is scheduled to address a business summit organized by the China Council for the promotion of International trade. He will then travel to the Great Hall of the People and hold formal talks with Wen Jiabao. Both PMs are expected to sign several MoUs and issue a joint statement on strategic alliance between the two countries.
Dr. Singh and Mr. Wen Jiabao will inaugurate a joint medical mission intended to commemorate the spirit of a 1938 Indian Medical Mission to China. Later, the Indian PM will attend a gala banquet hosted for him at the Great Hall of the People.
On Tuesday, Dr. Singh will deliver an address to scholars at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences titled "India and China in the 21st Century". Later, he will meet the Chairman of China’s National People’s Congress, Wu Bangguo and President Hu Jintao before concluding his China visit.
