Bhutan joins the Elite Democracy Club of the World
The tiny Himalayan kingdom, Bhutan, has finally joined the elite club of democratic countries in the world. Bhutan, which went to polls on Monday, has elected a staunch royalist as its first Prime Minister. Interestingly, it was the king of Bhutan who had to convince his people that democracy was a good idea.Monday's elections ended the century-old monarchy in India's small neighbour. The new Prime Minister Jigmi Kinley, had twice served as the Prime Minister under royal rule. His "Bhutan Peace and Prosperity Party" is considered the most royalist party. He swept the polls, as his party won 44 out of the 47 parliament seats. The 28-year old king, Jigme Keshar Namgyal Wangchuck, will remain the head of state.monarchy."
