Devastation in Myanmar, Death Toll reaches 15,000

The Cyclone Nargis continues to play havoc in Myanmar, as the latest death toll reached 15,000. Thousands of people are still missing. The Military Junta government has begun relief and rescue operations on a war-footing. The UN and Several foreign agencies has stepped in to provide humanitarian assistance to devastated people in Myanmar. Aid agencies have dispatched teams to find ways of providing clean water, food and other supplies in the affected areas. Many villages and islands are still completely cut off.

Till yesterday, the Military government in Myanmar had not asked for any international help. However, as the situation became grave, Foreign Minister Nyan Win called for foreign assistance, acknowledging Myanmar was in deep crisis. While the European Union released $3 million in initial emergency aid, the United States offered an initial $2.5 million dollars to Myanmar. India had dispatched two naval ships carrying food and medical supplies to Myanmar. The two ships carry food items, clothing, tents, blankets and medicines.
