Kalam defends Pokhran II Nuclear Test

On the eve of the 10th anniversary of Pokhran-II nuclear test, former President Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam asserted that the nuclear tests strengthened India's standing on the global arena. He also termed the tests as very important for the nation. "It was a very important decision on the part of the Indian government to go for test explosion of nuclear devices on May 11, 1998," said Kalam in Bhubaneswar, Orissa.

Dr. Kalam also defended the Indo-US nuclear deal, saying it will help the country in several ways. Interestingly, the UPA government has decided not to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Pokhran-II, in order deny the BJP a credit for the test.

Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam delivered the first convocation of Ravenshaw University, Cuttack (Orissa). He appealed to the youth to work hard to transform dreams into reality. He also expressed confidence that India would be the best place in the world to live in by 2020.

In his own words, "Dreams transform into thoughts and thoughts into action and with knowledge all problems would be defeated and goals achieved." Dr. Kalam presented medals and awards to 50-odd graduates of Ravenshaw University. Orissa Governor and Chancellor of the University, M C Bhandare was also present at the occasion.
