Pakistan: Sacked Judges to be restored by May 12

After a few days of hectic negotiations, Pakistan government's coalition partners PPP and PML (N) reached an agreement to restore the sacked judges who were ousted by President Pervez Musharraf when he proclaimed emergency in the country. The decision was taken at an meeting held between Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari in Dubai.

According to Nawaz Sharif, all deposed judges will be restored on May 12, 2008. Pakistan's National Assembly will approve a resolution in this regard. The judges to be restored, will include Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. Both parties have agreed to retain the present judges brought in by Musharraf. The return of Chaudhury and other SC judges would put Pervez Musharraf in a tight spot. It would be interesting to see how Musharraf reacts to the latest development.
