1971 War Hero Sam Manekshaw passes away

Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, popularly known as "Sam Bahadur", passed away in the Military Hospital in Wellington, Tamil Nadu. He was 94. Sam Manekshaw led Indian Army to a famous victory over Pakistan in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. He was the recipient of the Padma Vibhushan and Military Cross. Sam Manekshaw was suffering from a lung disease and slipped into coma yesterday.

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, President Dr. Pratibha Patil, Defence Minister A K Antony and many other eminent leaders have condoled the death of Sam Manekshaw. Manekshaw was associated with Indian Army for nearly four decades. He was one of the 40 cadets of the first batch that passed out from the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun. Manekshaw became the 8th Chief of Army Staff when he succeeded General Kumaramangalam on June 7, 1969.
