Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw cremated at Ooty

Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, who led India's famous victory over Pakistan in 1971 and was instrumental in the creation of Bangladesh, was cremated with a state honour at Ooty. He had been living at Wellington near Ooty since 1973. Manekshaw passed away on Friday at the age of 94.

Sam Manekshaw fought the World War II as a young soldier and even won the prestigious Military Cross. His finest moment came when he led Indian Army to a victory over Pakistan in 1971. He was the Chief of Army Staff when 1971 Bangladesh War took place. Manekshaw was known as a man of determination. Even a tough person like Indira Gandhi personally admired him. He always meant business and did not allow political interference in his military affairs.

Sam Manekshaw became India's first Field Marshal in 1973. He retired in the same year and then lived in Wellington till his death. His cremation was held as per the Parsi rituals with full military honour. An era in Indian military history came to an end with his death. Long Live Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw!
