CPM expels Speaker Somnath Chatterjee from Party

Breaking News! In a dramatic development, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), most popularly known as the CPM, expelled veteran leader and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee from the party. The decision was taken by CPM Politburo after Somnath Chatterjee defied the party and did not resign from Speaker's post even though Left parties withdrew support to the government. He maintained that Speaker's post was above party politics and he would not resign.

Somnath Chatterjee had been associated with the CPM for 40 years. He became the Member of Parliament first time in 1971. Somnath Chatterjee won parliamentary elections 10 times. He also received the 'Best Parliamentarian Award' in 1996. He also held several important positions in the parliamentary committees. Meanwhile, the Congress has supported Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and said it wants him to continue as the Speaker.
