China leads the Point Tally at Beijing Olympics, Phelps creates World Record

The Beijing Olympics has just begun. But host China has taken a lead over the United States on the point tally. Czech shooter Katerina Emmons won the first gold medal of Beijing Olympics 2008, by winning the 10m Air Rifle competition with a new games record. She edged out strong favourite China's Du Li, who was the Athens Olympics gold medalist.

Chen Xiexia gave China its first gold in Beijing Olympics by winning women's 48-kilogram title in weightlifting. Swimmer Michael Phelps from the USA created a World Record by clocking 4 minutes, 3.84 seconds in the 400-meter individual medley. He is considered as the hot favourite to break Mark Spitz's 36-year-old record of seven gold medals in one Olympics. China leads the point tally with 3 gold medals and 1 silver. The US is on second spot with 2 gold medals, 2 silvers and 4 bronze medals.
