India at Beijing Olympics: Latest Update (Day 3)
Despite the failure in other events, Abhinav Bindra gave the much-needed smile to billions of people in the country. Abhinav struck the first-ever individual Olympic gold for India, by winning the 10m Air Rifle event. August 11 will be remembered as the historic day of Indian sports. Here's the latest update from Beijing:Good News:
1) Abhinav Bindra won gold medal in 10m Air Rifle event with a score 700.5. He beat contestants from China and Finland to get the top slot.
2) Saina Nehwal beat World No. 4 Wang Chen of Hong Kong to storm into the quarterfinals of Badminton singles (women).
Bad News:
1) Sania Mirza bowed out in the first round of tennis singles. She was trailing 1-6, 1-2 when she retired because of an injury.
2) Anup Sridhar lost to higher ranked Japanese player Shoji Sato in the second round of Badminton singles (men).
3) Boxer A L Lakra crashed out of the boxing competition after losing 5-9 to Athens Games bronze medallist Bahodirjon Sultanov in the first round of the featherweight category.
4) In Rowing, Devender Kumar Khandwal and Manjeet Singh finished at the bottom in the lightweight men’s double sculls heats.
5) In swimming, 16-year-old Virdhawal Khade finished 48th in the 200m freestyle overall chart.
6) Nachhatar Singh Johal too failed to do any wonder in Sailing.
7) World Champion Gagan Narang failed to reach the finals of 10m Air Rifle shooting event. He missed a final berth by just a single point. However, Abhinav Bindra won gold medal in that event.
8) In Rowing, Bajrang Lal Thakar lost in the quarterfinals.
