Latest Update from Beijing Olympics: Boxer Akhil Kumar enters Quarterfinals

Among the dead Indian athletes at Beijing Olympics, boxer Akhil Kumar emerged as the only hope, as he entered the quarterfinals of 54kg Bantamweight event. Akhil Kumar beat World Champion Sergey Vodopyanov in the pre-quarterfinal. Vodopyanov was leading the bout till the 3rd round, but Akhil came back strongly in the final round.

Both boxers were tied at 9-9 after the end of the bout. But the jury decided in Akhil's favour, as he delivered the final punch and won the final point. It was a thrilling contest. If Akhil wins in quarterfinals, he will be assured of a medal, since all semifinalists get a medal in Olympics Boxing. After winning the quarterfinal bout, Akhil Kumar said he would try to get a gold medal at Beijing.
