Senate Panel approves Indo-US Nuclear Deal
Breaking News! Coinciding with the arrival of Indian PM Dr. Manmohan Singh in the United States, a leading Senate Panel approved the Indo-US nuclear deal. the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the bill by a majority 19-2 votes. The amendment moved by Senator Feiingold to toughen restrictions on selling the technology to India to reprocess the nuclear fuel, was defeated by a 15-4 vote.the Indo-US nuclear deal will be now taken by the full Congress before the scheduled meeting between US President George Bush and Indian PM Dr. Manmohan Singh on September 28. A few hurdles are still there. The House Committee on Foreign Affairs hasn't yet decided on the date it wants to take up the issue. In addition, the current economic crisis in the United States may force the lawmakers to delay the ratification of Indo-US nuclear deal. The fingers have been crossed as of now.
