Indian Archery Team win Gold in World Cup

--By our Delhi Correspondent

The Indian Archery team comprising of Rahul Banerjee, Jayant Talukdar and Mangal Singh beat strong contender Malaysia to win the World Cup at Antalya, Turkey. The Indian team scored a narrow 218-215 victory. This is the first time Indian archers won a such a big event in Archery. Although they won individual gold medals in the past couple of years, a team gold was something India hoped for long.

Unfortunately, India can't take part in the team event at Beijing Olympics Games 2008, as only two archers managed to qualify for the games. However, India took their revenge by beating Italy in this competition. It could be recalled that India missed the Olympic berth after losing a crucial match to Italy in a previous competition.

Burney Deportation: MHA orders Probe

--By our Delhi Correspondent

A high-level probe has been ordered into the Ansar Burney deportation issue. It could be recalled that former Pakistan Human Rights minister Ansar Burney was deported to Dubai on his arrival at IGI Airport yesterday night. He was to attend a 2-day conference in India. The unprecedented deportation caused a diplomatic row between India and Pakistan. The foreign ministry spokesperson said that it could be a mistake.

Meanwhile, after the Foreign Ministry officials held talks with the Ministry of Home counterparts on this issue, a probe has been ordered to find out who issued the circular for the deportation of Ansar Burney. It is an irony that nobody has any information about the order, whereas a former diplomat was deported in an undignified manner. Burney is obviously heartbroken, as he is the one who helped Indian prisoner Kashmir Singh's release from Pakistan jail and later took up Sarabjit Singh's case with the Pakistani government.

The government is still trying to find out why Burney's name was figured in the look-out list and why it was not updated. The look-out notice is normally meant for undesirable elements, suspected terrorists and people wanted in fraud and criminal cases. Ansar Burney said that he saw people crying when he was being deported. He made it clear that his deportation was not due to any glitches, but was done on the instructions from top authorities. Burney confirmed that an immigration official at the IGI Airport recognized him and expressed regret that he had to deport a person of Burney's stature.

According to latest update, the Home Ministry has expressed deep regret over the incovenience caused to Burney because of the deportation and admitted that it was a big mistake. However, the MHA clarified that Burney was denied entry (not deported), as he did not have adequate documentation. The probe will unravel the mystery of the deportation.

Speculations begin, as the Govt is set for a hike in Fuel Prices

Speculations and rumours are doing round ahead of a possible hike in fuel prices to be taken by the UPA government today or tomorrow. According to sources, there is a near unanimity over the hike among the UPA partners and the Left. However, Left may still oppose any hike in public view.

While the Petroleum Ministry has proposed a Rs. 10 hike in petrol prices, Rs. 5 hike in diesel prices and Rs. 50 hike in gas prices, the government may settle for a Rs. 3- 4 hike in petrol prices and Rs. 2 - 3 hike in diesel prices. The gas cylinder prices may be hiked by Rs. 10 - Rs. 20 or nil. The government may announce a cut in customs and excise duties on crude imports. It might also issue oil bonds. It is also speculated that branded oil prices may witness a sharp hike.

Finance Minister expresses 'concern', as Inflation surges to 8.1%

Despite the government claims of effective measures to curb the rising inflation rate and skyrocketing food prices, the inflation crossed the psychological barrier of 8 percent to end at 8.1% during the week ending May 17. Earlier, it was pegged at 7.82%. While the fruits and vegetable prices rose by 3 percent, marine products rose by 6 percent. The food prices went up by 0.6 percent. The Finance Minister said that necessary measures will be taken to control the rising inflation if necessary.

For the first time, Mr. Chidambaram admitted that 8.1% inflation rate is "worrisome". Even the government is not sure if it would be able to maintain the estimated GDP growth under the current circumstances. The rising inflation has been attributed to increase in global food and fuel prices. There is no doubt that market is witnessing a slowdown and many sectors are worst affected.

Royal Flag comes down at Nepal Palace

Nepal celebrated its first day as a Republic on Thursday by taking down the royal flag atop the Nepal Palace. King Gyanendra and his playboy son Paras remained mute spectators to their transition from Royals to common citizens. Earlier, on Wednesday, the Constituent Assembly had abolished the 240-year old Monarchy and declared Nepal as a Republic. 'Former' King Gyanendra has been give a two-week deadline to leave the Royal Palace.

People celebrated with joy, as the royal flag was replaced by Nepal's national place atop the palace. Nepal, the only Hindu state in the world, has become a secular republic now. Still it seems that everything is not well within Nepal. There are many people, who still lend their tacit support to the King and a Hindu Monarchy.

What's the truth behind Arushi's e-mail to Dr. Rajesh Talwar?

The Noida police yet again resorted to the character assassination of a minor girl, who is already dead and can't defend herself. The police, desperate to gather "evidence" against Dr. Rajesh Talwar in the Arushi murder case, found some e-mail and chat transcripts from her computer and deliberately misinterpreted it to prove that Arushi's social conduct was not good and she was at loggerheads with her father Rajest Talwar. The police also claimed that Arushi had close affairs with three guys.

The e-mail which was sent by Arushi to Dr. Rajesh Talwar a year back, carried an argument between the father-daughter duo. Arushi was not happy at being prevented from doing a 'certain' thing and she tried to justify her decisions saying most of her friends do the same thing. The Noida police went into a brainstorming session to put up a false picture. Arushi's mother Nupur Talwar later clarified that Arushi wanted to watch a film with her friends, but Rajesh objected to it. Arushi was not happy and wrote that e-mail to her mother while addressing both her parents.

There was nothing unusual and it happens in all families. Even chatting with opposite sex over phone or Internet has become a common trend in the modern society. But Noida police has crossed all limits to show this ordinary e-mail transcript as a strong proof in the Arushi murder case. Under fire from Talwar family, media, public and politicians, the Noida police may come up with more fabricated stories in the coming days. Only a CBI inquriry will resolve the mystery surrounding the Arushi murder case.

Everywhere else in the country, the Gujjars burnt the effigies of Vasundhara Raje Scindia. The Congress hasn't yet taken a definite stand, as it sees major gains in the coming elections, if a negative public opinion is built against the Vasundhara Raje government in Rajasthan.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhra Raje had written to the PM, seeking a 4 - 6 percent separate ST reservations for the Gujjars. According to sources, she argued that the 27% OBC quota enjoyed by the Gujjars could be reduced to compensate for new quota. Historic Win for BJP in Karnataka, Congress, JD(S) humbled

The long wait is finally over. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), defying all permutations and combinations, made history in Karnataka by emerging as the strong contender to form the next government on its own. It no longer requires the support of JD(S), which paid the price for its betrayal.

Out of the 224 seats in Karnataka Assembly, BJP won 110 seats. It now requires 3 more seats to get a majority, which is within its reach, as some independents and other small parties hinted at support the party.

The BJP proved the NDTV exit poll accurate, which predicted almost similar number of seats for all parties. While the BJP bagged 110 seats, Congress won 80 seats. The JD(S), lagged way behind with just 28 seats. Others won 6 seats. While BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate BS Yediyurappa won by a convincing margin, former Karnataka CM N Dharam Singh (Congress) lost the election. He had earlier won assembly elections 9 times. Kumaraswamy managed to win his seat.

The BJP's state and central leadership are upbeat over the results, as the party is going to form government in South India for the first time. The Karnataka results came as a major setback for the Congress, as it has already lost Punjab, Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh in the past 12 months.
