PM addresses NRIs on Pravasi Bharatiya Divas
Breaking News! Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh addressed the NRIs at the seventh edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, which began in Chennai. The conclave will be concluded tomorrow. PM Dr. Singh focused on terrorism and economy while addressing the summit. He expressed confidence that the Indian economy will grow by 7% this fiscal and will remain among the fastest growing economies in the world."The fundamentals of Indian economy is very strong and we will continue to grow despite the global meltdown. Much of India's growth is internally driven and I expect we can maintain a strong pace of growth in coming years", said Manmohan Singh during the inauguration ceremony of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.
The Prime Minister spoke in unequivocal terms on the issue of terrorism. He asserted that India is working closely with the global community to fight the menace of terrorism. "We will ensure that no country is used as a safe haven or launching pad for the terrorists", said Dr. Manmohan Singh. He did not mention Pakistan during his address.
While speaking about the protection of Indian workers abroad, he said, "We have put in place several measures for protection of our workers overseas. We have launched an e-governance project on migration". The PM launched a virtual think tank called 'Global Indian Network', which aims at connecting people of Indian origin from a variety of disciplines to users at the national, state and local levels in the country.
Chennai is hosting the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas conclave the first time. The inauguration ceremony was held at the Nandambakkam Convention Centre amid tight security.
