Daily Telegraph denies Varun Gandhi's Sterilisation Remarks

24/7 News Network: In a significant development, the Daily Telegraph has denied reports that it quoted Varun Gandhi saying he favours sterilisation, which was initiated by his father Sanjay Gandhi during the 1975 Emergency. The newspaper clarified that Varun only wanted to work towards the goal of "family planning" in India, not sterilisation, while talking to the newspaper.

Earlier, a huge hue and cry was raised over Varun Gandhi's alleged statement that he wanted to follow his father Sanjay Gandhi's sterilisation policy. Some Indian TV channels and newspapers highlighted this issue throughout the day yesterday, which later made Varun Gandhi to come up and clarify that he never made any such statement.

According to PTI reports, Daily Telegraph's South Asia Editor, Dean Nelson, clarified that Varun Gandhi advocated a softened policy towards family planning, as the earlier policy was not properly implemented. According to Nelson, Varun also talked about financial benefits for those who supports family planning.
