Congress on back foot over Liberhan Report, BJP gets United
New Delhi: Breaking News! The Justice Liberhan report on the Babri demolition has caused much damage to the Congress than BJP. Rather, the disintegrated BJP leaders have come up together, after 'The Indian Express' reported the indictment of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the report. Even the public is outraged that Vajpayee's name has been dragged into the controversy.
The Congress is in a damage control mode. Congress President Sonia Gandhi has called a meeting of top leaders, including Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defence Minister AK Antony to discuss their strategy on this issue. The BJP has also called a meeting of its top leaders to corner the Congress on this issue and gain public sympathy.
The CNN-IBN just reported that Vajpayee has not been indicted by Justice Liberhan in his report. "It is wrong to say that Vajpayee was indicted. The commission just made some references to Vajpayee's past speeches about Ram Temple movement. Vinay Katiyar, Uma Bharti and Murli Manhoar Joshi have been indicted for encouraging the demolition of Babri Masjid", said CNN-IBN.
Former counsel of Liberhan Commission, Anupam Gupta expressed surprise over Vajpayee's name in the report. "We all agreed to drop Vajpayee's name from the probe, as there were no allegations against him. He was not even summoned by the Commission. I am shocked and surprised to learn that Atalji was indicted by the Liberhan Commission", he said.
Justice Liberhan did not comment on the content of the report, but he expressed his anger and disappointment that the report was leaked to the media. He also clarified that he never leaked the report to any media organisation.
