India ranks 84th among 180 Nations on the Index of Corrpution
New Delhi: Breaking News! India ranks 84th on the index of corruption, with a poor rating of just 3.4 out of 10. However, India has improved its score from 2.7 in 2001 to 3.4 in 2009. Ironically, India is still the least corrupt country in South Asia, as compared to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Nepal. The data includes 180 countries in the world.
The Global Corruption Index was prepared by the Berlin-based group, Transparency International with the inputs from the African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, Bertelsmann Foundation, Economist Intelligence Unit, Freedom House, Global Insight and World Bank.
The top countries that are free of corruption are New Zealand (9.4), Denmark (9.3), Singapore (9.2), Sweden (9.2) and Switzerland (9.0). The UK and Japan are tied on 17th spot with a score of 7.7 each, while the US is on 18th spot with a rating of 7.5.
Somalia as the world's most corrupt country, with a low rating of 1.1. It was followed closely by Afghanistan at 1.3, Burma at 1.4, and Sudan and Iraq, which were tied for fourth with scores of 1.5.
