By Himanshu Guru: The country pays tribute to the Ex Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi on her 27th death Anniversary. On 31st October 1984 she was assassinated by her bodyguards at her 1, Safdarjung Road, New Delhi residence.
Beant Singh fired three rounds into her from his side-arm and Satwant Singh then fired 30 rounds from his sten gun into her prostrate body. Beant Singh was shot dead by other bodyguards at the scene of the assassination and Satwant Singh was arrested by PM's other bodyguards.
Indira Gandhi was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) immediately after the shooting. But she died one hour later during the surgery to remove the bullets. Later, on 6 January 1989, Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh (for conspiring) were hanged for assassination of Mrs. Gandhi.
Indira Gandhi is the world's second longest serving female Prime Minister. This ‘iron Lady’ served as prime minister of India for three consecutive terms from 1966–77. She was continuing the fourth term when get assassinated. Indira Gandhi was the second woman to hold the office of the prime minister in a country.
Indira Gandhi, one of the best-known women of the 20th century was the daughter of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. She was born on November 19, 1917 in Allahabad in a family that was at the centre of Indian freedom movement.
Indira Gandhi married a Parsi named Feroze Gandhi in 1942. Indira Gandhi campaigned the slogan “Garibi Hatao" or ‘eliminate poverty’, during the fifth general elections in March 1971 and won an unprecedented two-third majority.
In 1974, India successfully conducted an underground nuclear test near the desert village of Pokhran in Rajasthan converting India into another nuclear power.
“Jab tak Suraj chand rahega, Indira tera naam rahega”. The name Indira Gandhi will be recalled for ever for her contribution and sacrifice to the country.
