By Chinmayee Dash: The arrest of Jadavpur University professor Ambikesh Mahapatra for allegedly spreading "anti-Mamata" cartoons has sparked a huge criticism against West Bengal Chief Minister terming her action as 'Hitler rule'.

The incident has raised serious concerns about freedom of speech in West Bengal. The arrest was termed as unjustified by the statesmen as well as the teachers.

Mahapatra alleged that he was roughed up by Trinamool Congress workers and forced to write an apology, confessing to being a CPI-M supporter. Later, he was arrested. Such incident will no doubt spoil the image of Mamata, who had vowed to establish peace in the state maintaining people's freedom.

According to some political analysts, Mamata has been changed a lot after she became the Chief Minister. Even a leader from her party Kabir Suman expressed shock at her action against the Professor. He said that the state is suffering from paranoia and a persecution mania.

The moment Mamata became the CM of Bengal, she was scared of certain things while there was no reason to be so, he added. If she would be in the opposition, she must have protested such action.

Such thing was not expected from Mamata, who had protested the Tata Nano project in Singur. But the moment she became a ruler, she was a total turnaround.

Her action was also criticised by the academicians. According to an academician Sunanda Sanyal, "Mamata shouldn't have been so touchy, if touchy people are declined to dictatorship it becomes difficult."

Mamata's dictatorship can be compared with the regime during the BSP supremo Mayawati, who was ousted in the recent assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. The politicians should remember that this is a democratic nation and people's fundamental rights should not be violated at any cost.

The professor was arrested for allegedly sharing "derogatory images" of Mamata and mocking her government policies, with 65 people through the university e-mail system.

Country's law is there to take its course if the Professor might have done something wrong. The TMC workers had no right to take action against him for such allegations.

Mahapatra has been now out on bail. The police are probing into the matter by tracking IP addresses from where the posts were made on the social networking sites. However, Mamata would not be able to retrieve her lost image for which she was voted to power.
