By Himanshu Guru: Justice has been sought through nationwide human rights campaign to protest Soni Sori’s wrongful arrest and custodial torture.

Sori is reported to be an innocent tribal schoolteacher from Chhattisgarh who has been accused of channeling funds from a corporate group to the banned CPI (Maoist).

Soni was arrested on October 4 by the Delhi police acting under the directions of the Chhattisgarh police. The police charge that Sori was involved as an agent for money transfer to the Maoists from the Essar group. However, Essar Group has openly denied the charge.

In her letter to the Supreme Court Advocate, Sori has narrated her ill-fated story of torture by the Police officials. (http://kractivist.wordpress.com/2012/01/26/s-p-ankit-garg-gets-gallantry-awards-black-republic-day/).

The NRS Government Hospital, Kolkata, established the presence of pebbles in Sori’s private parts and this report was submitted to the Supreme court in November 2011 after which Sori was shifted out of Dantewada to Raipur Central Jail where she is lodged now.

In January this year, the news of massive protest by women human rights groups against the torture had hit the headlines when the police official was awarded the President’s Police Medal who allegedly supervised the sexual torture on Sori.

The custodial torture to Soni Sori seems to be a clear violation of Human Rights and is a matter of deep concern. Again, the independent medical report conducted under the orders of the Supreme Court has brought out the proofs of torture.

But no proper action has been taken yet to provide her justice. Even, the Chhattisgarh Authorities have not instituted an enquiry so far. Again, the women’s groups stopped from meeting her in Raipur. Hence still action is awaited to provide her justice.
