By Himanshu Guru: Finally UPA named union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee as its presidential candidate on Friday and the ‘Bangali Dada’ from West Bengal is now an aspirant for the biggest office in India.  Pranab da hails from a Bengali Hindu Kulin Brahmin family. His father Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee was also a politician who was a member of West Bengal Legislative Council from 1952 to 1964. Pranab da had his college education from the Suri Vidyasagar College in Birbhum district of West Bengal.  Pranab da, who had began his career first as a college teacher and then as a journalist became a member of Rajya Sabha from the Congress Party in 1969. He was re-elected in 1975, 1981, 1993 and 1999. He became the Finance Minister of India from 1982 to 1984.  Pranab Mukherjee was pushed out of the Congress party from 1986 to 1989. Later he served as External Affairs Minister from 1995 to 1996 in Narsimha Rao's cabinet. He was made Leader of the House in the Lower House when he won the Lok Sabha elections for the first time from Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency.  The UPA met at the PM’s residence where its Chairperson Sonia Gandhi proposed the name of Pranab Mukherjee, which was unanimously approved.  Samajwadi Party and BSP have also reportedly extended their support to Mukherjee for the first citizen. |
