Entertainment Desk: Bollywood wardrobe and Melodrama specialist Sanjay Leela Bhansali's artistic masterpiece "Devdas" has been named among '10 Greatest Movies of the Millennium' by Time magazine.
While 2008 movie "Wall E" occupies the top slot in the list Bhansali’s ‘Devdas’ comes eighth after "The Lord of the Rings", James Cameron's "Avatar", "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", German film "The White Ribbon", "The Hurt Locker" and "Synecdoche, New York".
The film is followed by Luhrmann's musical "Moulin Rouge" and this year's Oscar winning silent drama "The Artist".
Time describes the work as "a visually intoxicating musical".
With this remarkable achievement Bhansali joins the likes of Hollywood veterans like James Cameron and Baz Luhrmann.
2002 love story ‘Devdas’ is based on the topic of a 1917 passionate love story originally penned by renowned creator/writer Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay in a novel.
Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai have played the legendary character of Devdas and Paro in the film while Madhuri has played the other woman, a prostitute. The film is a triangular love story.
Time's Richard Corliss described the film as "a visually intoxicating musical with grandeur the old Hollywood moguls would have loved. Bhansali is overwhelmed to see his film recognized on the international level alongside Hollywood classics.
"The news couldn't have come at a better time, 'Devdas' completes 10 momentous years...It's a very proud and happy moment for me. For a mainstream Hindi film like 'Devdas' to gain such cinematic recognition and be part of such an illustrious list, is an honour not just for me but for the Indian industry at large." Bansali says.
