50 per cent Women marry before 18, says Study PDF Print E-mail

New Delhi: Breaking News! According to a latest research, at least 50 per cent women in India get married even before attaining the age of 18 years. The study, released by Union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, gave a gloomy picture about the so-called women empowerment.

 

"Marriage happens very early for most of the women in most states - one fifth were married below the age of 15 years and 49 percent were married before turning 18," said the study.

 

They study was conducted in six Indian states - Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. The data was collected from over 58,000 youths in the age group of 15-29 years.

 

According to the findings, situation in Bihar is very alarming. At least 77 per cent in Bihar get married before the age of 18, concluded the study.

 

The study was carried out by the Population Council, Delhi and International Institute of Population Sciences, Mumbai.
