News Desk: Joining hands together in support of taking action against climate change, people across the world will switch off their lights for an hour on Saturday to mark the Earth Hour 2012.

Earth Hour is a worldwide event, which is organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) on the last Saturday of March every year. People used to observe the day by turning off lights at their homes and business establishments for an hour to raise awareness about the climate change.


This year, Earth Hour will take place today from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, as per the countries' respective local time.


The concept Earth Hour was first developed by the WWF in Australia in the year 2004 expressing a big concern on the issue of climate change. WWF Australia and advertising agency Leo Burnett Sydney had initiated the idea of switching off the lights in a large scale by launching a campaign in 2005.  


Every year everyone joins in the countdown to Earth Hour, which starts at 8:30 pm. The lights stay off to keep the houses and business establishments dark. This is the way to reduce the energy consumption at least once in a year.


The campaign for Earth Hour "I Will If You Will" was launched in February this year, engaging its global community to make their efforts publicly through social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and email. Even YouTube had also played a key role to inspire people from all corners of the globe to take action on climate change and to share their commitment to our environment on March 31, 2012.
