New Delhi: Breaking News! India launched a new type of oral polio vaccine to combat the polio menace in the country. The launch of the new vaccine is seen as a significant step to eradicate polio from the country.

Even though the mass immunisation efforts made in India in the last decade has brought down the number of polio cases to a big extent, the disease still exists in many parts of the country. The bivalent oral vaccine is expected to eradicate it completely.

The bivalent oral polio vaccine is intended immunise children against two types of wild polio viruses - P1 and P3. The P2 virus was already eliminated from India in 1999.

The bivalent oral polio vaccine (BOPV) was launched in Bihar on Sunday, followed by Uttar Pradesh. It will be launched in other state in a phased manner. In 2009, India reported over 700 fresh cases of polio. Out of these, 641 were P3 infections. Of these, UP accounted for 571 cases, followed by Bihar (114).
