News Desk: According to the latest reports, the swine Flu death toll in India has gone up to 16 with the number of cases detected up to 211, spread over at least five states. The latest was a 25-year-old from Anand, Gujarat.

Swine Flu has spread over five states including Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Goa and Karnataka. Maharashtra is the worst hit with 9 deaths and 126 cases only from Pune.

In 2009, this H1N1 had claimed 1410 deaths and 19,947 infected back then. At that time it had been witnessed not only in India but also in certain other countries including the US.

While the death toll is moving in an incessant ascending order the government does not feel there is any reason to worry. Health Secretary PK Pradhan said “The Health Ministry is monitoring the situation and there is no cause for worry. The states where cases had been reported have been advised to step up surveillance to control the further spread of the virus.”

Although symptoms of swine flu are identical to that of regular flu, it is more fatal. Death often occurs as a result of respiratory failure, pneumonia, high fever, renal failure and dehydration. The aged, young, and pregnant are the most vulnerable class to be trapped with H1N1.

Swine flu tests are available at all government hospitals and the medicine Tamiflu is available indigenously on prescription.
