News Desk: In a rare delivery case, a woman delivered quintuplets at the Lal Ded Hospital on Thursday which was also the first ever case of its kind in Srinagar.
Out of the five babies three are male and rest two are female. During the birth while four of the infants weighed two kgs, one was underweight and hence given resuscitation.
Dr Abdul Hamid, associate professor, Government Medical College, Srinagar and Dr Mushtaq Matoo led the team of doctors who conducted the surgery.
Mother of the infants Afroza Begam hails from the remote Tangmarg region of North Kashmir's Baramulla district.
During her pregnancy first it was detected that she had three fetuses. Afterwards an expert conducted the ultrasound test and detected that she had four babies. However, during the surgery only it was found that she had five babies in her womb.
"We were surprised today to see five babies. It was a sweet surprise," Dr Hamid said.
The doctors informed that Afroza had been applied spinal anesthesia and she undergone the lower segment caesarean section. Dr Hamid also said that during the operation only they had informed the mother about the delivery of five kids for which she was much excited.
All the new-born infants have been shifted to the neonatology ward for better care.
