Doctors to go on Strike on June 25 against NCHRH Bill PDF Print E-mail

News Desk: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced to observe a strike on June 25 to protest against amendments to the Clinical Establishment Act, 2010, and National Commission for Human Resources for Health (NCHRH) Bill, 2011, proposed by the Union Health Ministry.

IMA has cited that the proposed bill would provide powers to the Centre to appoint non-medicals as members in the commission which is unjustified on the ground that a person from another field should not control the affairs of the medical profession.

The Bill also suggests setting up of a superior body to govern the state medical councils. IMA has also demanded that the supremacy of the MCI must be maintained.

The doctors have advocated that the bill will destroy medium-level hospitals that cater to 80% of the country's population. So it neither favors doctors nor the public.

Over 25,000 doctors across Gujarat are expected to strike work on June 25 in protest against the decision of the Central government to pass the National Council for Human Resources in Health (NCHRH) Bill, 2011.

Dr Mehul Shah, president at Ahmedabad chapter of Indian Medical Association said that “All private hospitals will remain closed on Monday but emergency services will be made available to the patients. However, government hospitals will continue to function. Government doctors and nurses will wear black bands at work. Medical students will also join the strike.”
