Breaking News: President Dr. Pratibha Patil finally signed the ordinance, which sought to dissolve the Medical Council of India (MCI). Dr. Patil too the decision on the recommendations of the Union Cabinet.

The decision to dissolve the MCI was taken after its President Ketan Desai was arrested by the CBI for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 2 crore to grant recognition to a medical college in Punjab even though it did not meet the MCI standards.

Ketan Desai, who is currently lodged in jail, had resigned. But the Cabinet wanted to clean up the system and dissolved the MCI. It will be replaced by a seven-member expert committee.
