Breaking News! Fish oil may not be much beneficial for women who are consuming during pregnancy to reduce the risk of premature birth and postpartum depression, claims a new US research study.

According to the study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, both fish and fish oil supplements contain the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is believed to promote memory in the kids. But, the current study found not more benefits conducting the experiment on 2,400 pregnant women for six months.

The participants were given 800 milligrams of DHA per day or placebo capsules containing vegetable oil. After six months when the women gave birth, it was not different in the DHA group versus the placebo group, measuring the rates of postpartum depression.

However, the previous studies suggested that eating more fish during pregnancy may help reducing postpartum depression and promote cognitive development in young children. It was believed that women taking DHA supplements were less likely to give birth prematurely.

The researchers need further more studies to come at the conclusion regarding the intake of fish and fish oil during pregnancy as previous studies prove the DHA supplements may be most useful to women who are at risk of delivering early, carrying twins and who conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF).
