Chennai: Tamil Nadu chief Minister Jayalalithaa finally gave her nod to the controversial Kudankulam nuclear power plant on Monday announcing a special package for the area.

Jayalalithaa in a statement on Monday said that immediate steps will be taken for the execution of the proposed plant. She announced a special package of Rs 500 crore for the development of the area where the plant is located.

Jayalalithaa, who had earlier opposed to the nuclear power plant, sought cooperation from other political parties to resume the work at the plant, which had been stalled since September 2011 by the People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE).

After the announcement, crackdown began on the anti-nuclear activists, who had been protesting at Kudankulam area.

Meanwhile, SP Udayakumar, an activist, who is leading the anti-nuclear movement, began a fast unto death. He had earlier criticised the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his alleged statement that the protest was funded by the US.

The protesters had raised their voice against the proposed nuclear power plant over safety issue. The villagers in Kudankulam feared that the lives would be affected in case of any nuclear accident.
