New Delhi: It seems that Army Chief General VK Singh is determined to make things difficult for the government. His recent letter over the ammunition reserve led to a huge uproar in the Parliament today.

The Army Chief's letter to the Prime Minister claims that India’s security is at risk, as the Army's tanks have run out of ammunition. He also said that the air defence is 97% obsolete and the infantry is short of critical weapons. The letter further claimed that there were “large-scale voids” in critical surveillance and night fighting capabilities.

The letter was sent to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on March 12. It is not known how it was leaked to the media. The JD(U) and RJD have demanded action against Army Chief General VK Singh for gross indiscipline, as he directly wrote to the PM over such a sensitive issue. The letter should have been sent to the Defence Minister instead of the PMO.

The Opposition BJP and other parties termed this issue as a matter of grave concern and demanded definite answer from the government. Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned over this issue.

Defence Minister AK Antony has confirmed the presence of the letter and said appropriate action will be taken on that.
