Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has urged the Centre to declare the historic Ram Sethu as a national monument with immediate effect.

Jayalalithaa wrote a letter to the Prime Minister, asking him not to do anything that would damage the Ram Sethu, which has "immeasurable historical, archaeological and heritage value".

Jayalalithaa opposed the proposed alignment of the Sethusamudram channel, which will damage the existing structure. Ram Sethu is also known as the 'Adam's Bridge'.
