Breaking News! Former BJP President Bangaru Laxman, who was convicted in connection with the 2001 Tehelka sting operation, has been sentenced to four years in jail. The latest development came as a big setback to the BJP, which was targeting the Congress on corruption issue.

73-year-old Bangaru Laxman, who pleaded for less punishment on health grounds, won't be able to get from this special CBI court, as the quantum of punishment is more than three years. He will be sent to Tihar Jail and may have to apply for a bail in the higher court.

The court convicted Laxman under the Prevention of Corruption Act. He was caught on camera while accepting Rs 1 lakh bribe from a fake arms dealer. Although the dealers (reporters) were planted by Tehelka.com, the CBI wanted maximum punishment for him.

While pronouncing the verdict, the special CBI court ruled that there could not be any leniency in the quantum of punishment, as corruption is a serious offence and the entire country is trying to get rid of this evil.

In addition to the jail sentence, a fine of Rs one lakh was also imposed on Laxman.
