News Desk: The Supreme Court suspended the life sentence awarded to the CPI (Maoist) activist Narayan Sanyal, who was found guilty of committing sedition by a Chhattisgarh trial court in 2010.
The apex court on Monday also granted a bail to the 78-year-old Sanyal considering his age. He was awarded 10 years imprisonment by a Raipur court for being member of the Maoist organisation. The activist has already spent over six years in jail since he was arrested in 2006.
A bench of justices GS Singhvi and SJ Mukhopadhaya said that the trial court would decide the condition for bail.
Sanyal was held guilty along with People’s Union of Civil Liberties’ Vice President Binayak Sen and a Kolkata businessman Piyush Guha for his nexus with Maoists.
While, Sen's sentence was suspended by the apex court on April 15 last year, Sanyal was serving the life term. Both were convicted on December 24, 2010, under the Indian Penal Code as well as offences under the Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act.
The three activists were also convicted under the provisions of Prevention of Unlawful Activities Act and sentenced to five years jail term.
