News Desk: A top police official of Uttar Pradesh openly supported the honour killing. He was caught on camera saying that he would have committed suicide or killed his own sister if she had eloped.
The deputy inspector general (DIG) of Saharanpur range, Satish Kumar Mathur's statement sparked controversy and the National Commission for Women (NCW) has called for the suspension of the officer.
Mathur made a shocking statement when he had gone for a routine inspection of police stations and met a man whose daughter had allegedly run away.
Shaukeen Mohammad, who had approached the DIG to help him to find out his missing daughter, was shocked hearing the reply from the officer. Mathur said that this is a matter of shame.
The officer snubbed the father justifying the honour killings and said, "I don't have magical power to recover your daughter. But if your daughter had eloped then you should be ashamed of it and end your life. I would have committed suicide or killed my sister if she had eloped".
The DIG was caught on the camera while he was replying to the victim's father. When questioned by the reporters about his statement, Mathur refused to comment. Â
However, the victim's father said that his daughter has been allegedly abducted by two youths from his house in Kaserwa village of Prabudh Nagar district.
Police have registered a case against the two accused Mokin Satpal and Oma Atra but no action has been taken so far. The father was shocked to know how DIG got the information that his daughter had eloped.
Reacting to the statement, the NCW said that the DIG should be suspended immediately as the matter is quite disturbing. The video shows that police used to harass the complaints in this manner.
