News Desk: Opposing the steep hike in petrol prices that drew public outrage, the BJP led National Democrtic Alliance (NDA) has called for a nation-wide bandh on May 31.

NDA convenor and JDU president Sharad Yadav confirmed that all the partners of the opposition alliance have been consulted and decided to observe a country-wide shut down on May 31.

The NDA is also holding talks with other parties for their support.

Dismissing the government's argument that the petrol prices were hiked by the oil companies, Yadav said that the government is trying to wash its hands off the decision.

He asked why the hike was announced a day after the budget session was over, not when the Parliament was in session. Government always tries to avoid the public outrage saying the decision is not at its hand. In fact, the oil companies used to hike the petrol price when the government wants.

The government is also likely to hike the prices of diesel and LPG very soon.

He alleged that common people are suffering due to the UP government's faulty and wrong policies that led to price rise on essential goods and commodities.

The sharp response from the NDA and even Congress allies came after the government increased the petrol prices by Rs 7.50 per litre, which is a big burden for common people.
