Breaking News! The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday rejected the Centre's decision to create a sub-quota for minorities saying there was no rationale in giving reservation to them on the basis of religion.

A division bench of the court comprising Chief Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice PV Sanjay Kumar passed an order on a PIL challenging the creation of 4.5% sub-quota for notified minority groups including Muslims, out of the 27 percent reservation meant for Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

Last month, the bench had reserved its judgment.

Earlier, the Centre had batted for its decision saying reservation to minorities was not provided on the basis of religion but on the basis of their backwardness. The sub-quota is meant for equitable distribution of benefits among the communities including minorities and backward classes.
