Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's wife Dimple Yadav was elected unopposed to the Lok Sabha. She was formally declared the winner from Kannauj constituency on Saturday.

The walkover was expected after the Congress and BSP refused to field their candidates against Dimple in the by-poll. The BJP wanted to field its candidate, but failed to file the nomination.

Again the withdrawal of the nominations of independent candidates paved the way for Dimple's victory.

Dimple's victory was clear when Congress skipped the election and Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which was forced out of power by the SP, also announced that it would not contest the by-poll.
