News Desk: The Supreme Court on Monday sought details of the religious sites were destroyed during the 2002 riots in Gujarat. The court directed the state government to estimate the amount required to repair those shrines.

The apex court said that it would examine whether the religious sites have been damaged in riots or natural calamities before giving compensation for the repair of the shrines.

The court was hearing the plea filed by the Islamic Relief Committee of Gujarat, which demanded compensation from the government for the destruction of the religious sites during the communal violence.

Reports said that around 500 shrines were destroyed during the 2002 Gujarat riots. Earlier, the High Court had pulled up the state government for its negligence that resulted in the destruction of the shrines.
