PM visits riot-hit Assam, announces Rs 300-cr Package PDF Print E-mail

Breaking News! Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh visited riot-hit Assam and took stock of the situation there. He also announced a Rs 300 crore relief package for the survivors.

 

"This should not have happened. This is a blot on our nation," said Dr. Singh after meeting the riot-hit victims at the relief camps in Kokrajhar district. The PM was accompanied by Governor JB Patnaik, chief minister Tarun Gogoi, AICC General Secretary Digvijaya Singh and APCC President Bhubaneswar Kalita.

 

The violent clashes between Bodos and immigrant Muslims have so far claimed 58 lives and displaced around four lakh people, who are living in relief camps.

 

Out of the Rs 300-cr relief package, Rs 100 crore will be given to the affected people in six districts. Another Rs 100 crore will be spent as special plan assistance for development programmes. The remaining Rs 100 crore will be given under the Indira Awas Yojna.

 

People, whose houses were completely damaged, will get Rs 30,000 each. The partial damaged houses will get Rs 20,000 under the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund. Rs. 2 lakh would be given to the next of kin of of those who died and Rs. 50,000 to the injured.
